Sitting for your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) knowledge test can be challenging. Considering you need to score above 85% in order to pass, there isn’t much room for wrong answers – and many often fail their first attempt.
Considering you’d undoubtedly prefer not to be among them, here are 5 essential tips that will help you to pass the CDL knowledge test more easily:
- Study your state’s Commercial Driver’s License Manual from back to front
The good news is that everything you need to pass the CDL knowledge test is right there in the manual. Although the CDL manuals differ from state to state, each one covers all the topics and information that will be tested on in the knowledge test for that state. Keep in mind that unlike other types of tests, your knowledge test won’t have any ‘trick’ questions – but will be quiz you on information straight out of the manual.
- Try out CDL practice tests beforehand
A good way to gauge how prepared you are for the CDL knowledge test is to take CDL practice tests in advance. Nowadays you can find these practice tests quite easily online, and many are state or topic specific so you should be able to test yourself on precisely the information that is going to appear in the actual knowledge test.
- Pinpoint topics that you’re weak in and try to focus on them
When you start to take practice tests you will likely find that there are some topics that you’re weaker in. If you are able to pinpoint these topics you should focus your studying on them so that you are able to ensure that you’re well-versed by the time you sit for the knowledge test.
- Make sure you’re well rested before the test
As much as it may be tempting to burn the midnight oil the day before the knowledge test – try not to do so. Ideally you should plan your studying so that you are well-prepared by that point and can get a good night’s sleep and show up fresh and well-rested for the test. If you have insufficient sleep it could affect your performance, and drinking lots of coffee will only make you feel more nervous and stressed out.
- Don’t be afraid of failing
If you’re too nervous, stressed out, and scared of failing odds are you may end up tripping yourself up when you take the CDL knowledge test. Hopefully taking ample practice tests and being well-rested will help to calm your nerves, but you should also keep in mind that if you do fail it isn’t the end of the world. All that it means is you’ll have to re-take it at a later date.
If nothing else these five tips should help you to realize one thing: The CDL knowledge test is really pretty straightforward. As such with the right preparation you should have no problem passing it, and will be one step closer to your CDL license once you do.
